Putting Parents Back in Charge

When I was a teacher in traditional schools, I always wished I could involve parents more in the educational process. I’d sit down with my colleagues after reviewing a child’s work, brainstorming strategies to help them succeed, and I would often think, “Why aren’t parents part of this conversation?” After all, they know their children better than anyone else.
As a mom myself, I knew I was the expert when it came to my own kids. I was the one who knew exactly what they needed by the sound of their cries. That connection, that deep understanding of what they needed, stayed with me as they grew older. While I needed a village to help support me, no one knew my kids like I did.
That’s why, at Lucas Literacy Lab, we value parental involvement in a way that goes beyond just a parent-teacher conference. We believe parents should be part of the conversation from the very start—whether it’s customizing your child’s curriculum or discussing strategies for their growth. This is a microschool, and we view education as a partnership—one that includes you, the parents, every step of the way.
So, why is your involvement so crucial at Lucas Literacy Lab, and how can you actively contribute to your child’s success?
1. Tailored Curriculum Choices for Parents
One of the things that makes Lucas Literacy Lab different from traditional schools is our ability to customize the curriculum to fit your child’s needs and interests. As a parent, you get to have a say in what your child learns. Whether you prefer a more traditional approach or want something that focuses on creativity and exploration, we work with you to craft a learning experience that makes sense for your child.
I know from experience how frustrating it can be to feel like you have little say in your child’s education. That’s why at Lucas Literacy Lab, we actively involve you in selecting a curriculum that aligns with your child’s unique strengths, challenges, and interests. This personalized approach helps your child engage with their learning in ways that are meaningful to them—and ultimately, that’s what makes all the difference.
2. Flexible Schedules That Fit Your Family’s Needs
We also understand that life is busy. As a mom, I’ve been there—juggling work, family time, and everything in between. That’s why at Lucas Literacy Lab, we offer flexible schedules for families. Whether you’re choosing full-time or part-time enrollment, you have the ability to select a schedule that works best for your family’s lifestyle.
This flexibility ensures that learning fits seamlessly into your day. And, just like the curriculum, your schedule can be adjusted based on your child’s needs or changes in family circumstances. We want to make this process as easy and stress-free as possible for you. After all, as a parent, you deserve to have some flexibility in how your child learns, too!
3. Ongoing Communication Throughout the Day
Let’s be honest: As parents, we want to know what’s going on with our kids all the time. At Lucas Literacy Lab, we get it. That’s why communication between home and school is a priority for us. You’ll hear from us regularly throughout the day with updates on your child’s progress, the projects they’re working on, and anything else that’s relevant to their learning journey.
This isn’t just about the occasional email or quarterly report; we truly believe in keeping you in the loop. Whether it’s through a quick check-in, a message about a breakthrough in their learning, or even a friendly “Hey, your kiddo is doing amazing in class today!”—we want you to feel connected to your child’s learning experience. This open communication creates a collaborative environment where we can all work together to ensure your child’s success.
4. Opt-In Extracurriculars to Enrich Your Child’s Experience
At Lucas Literacy Lab, we know that learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom. That’s why we offer a variety of extracurricular activities that you can choose for your child. Whether it’s art, music, coding, or sports, you have the flexibility to pick activities that will enrich your child’s education and nurture their passions.
As a parent, you get to be involved in selecting these activities based on what excites your child. Extracurriculars are a great way to give your child the opportunity to explore different interests and talents, and it’s another way for you to actively contribute to their educational experience.
A True Partnership for Success
At Lucas Literacy Lab, we see education as a partnership. We know that you, as a parent, are the expert on your child—just as I am on mine. Your involvement in their education is crucial, and together, we create a learning environment that is personalized, flexible, and supportive. From tailoring the curriculum to staying in constant communication and selecting extracurricular activities, your role is vital in helping your child succeed.
Education is about more than just what happens in the classroom. It’s about having a team of people who truly care about your child and are invested in their growth. At Lucas Literacy Lab, that’s exactly what we’re here to provide: a village that’s built on collaboration, communication, and a shared commitment to helping your child thrive.
We’re in this together, and I couldn’t be more excited to see what we can achieve when parents, educators, and students work hand in hand.
