A Peek Inside The Microschool Every Child Dreams Of

ree

Step inside Lucas Literacy Lab and you’ll feel it immediately. The hum of curiosity, the laughter of children, and the scent of autumn projects filling the air. The first nine weeks of our second school year have been pure magic! Our kids walk through the door, kick off their shoes, and jump into a day that is never the same as the one that preceded it.

A Jungle Created by Young Hands

Our school is currently a jungle. Literally. After studying the work of Jane Goodall, our students selected their favorite primates from animal encyclopedias, observed and researched them, and built their habitats inside our school. Their studies have culminated in vines hanging across the ceilings and towering trees, crafted entirely from found materials designed and built by the students themselves. The walls are filled with placards, diagrams, poems, and artwork, displaying everything they’ve learned. Our families were invited to experience our jungle and hear presentations from their mini zoologists.

Hands-On Learning That Sticks

Here, learning is never just about sitting and listening. Our mornings are packed with two hours of rigorous core academics, utilizing individualized learning plans tailored to each student.

But the afternoons are where the wonder truly unfolds. Students have built hoverboards, bubble machines, and disc launchers, and explored engineering concepts through hands-on problem-solving.

During our brain unit study, they faced fears and learned how to build new neural pathways. The Human Heart unit brought CPR lessons and a visit from a first responder, teaching students how to look for the helpers in times of crisis, like on 9/11.

Literacy, Creativity, and Community

Reading and writing flourish here in ways that make every day exciting. Students are buddy-reading "Bridge to Terabithia" and creating a collaborative scrapbook filled with reflections, sketches, and memories. Writing contests challenge their imagination and skills, and our abundant classroom libraries allow every child to fall in love with books, discover new authors, and continue favorite series through book shopping days and try-a-chapter challenges.

They’re immersed in a culture of reading for the love of it, with cozy independent reading time on plush couches, and a minimum of four daily read-alouds that incorporate fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and more. We even had a 'Meet-the-Protagonist' day, where our students came in dressed as the protagonists from the books they'd just finished and spent the day in character, sharing their stories firsthand.

Giving Back and Making Connections

Our students have also been learning the joy of giving. During our November philanthropy mini-unit, they are knitting scarves, making bracelets, and drawing portraits for local nursing home residents, inspired by books like The Mitten and Extra Yarn. They are also visiting the residents of the home for an afternoon of intergenerational crafting.

Celebrations, Traditions, and Holiday Cheer

This season, we’ve celebrated our Harvest Festival party with pumpkin decorating, crafts, a scavenger hunt, costumes, and a cozy movie.

And the excitement keeps building: our Thanksgiving potluck will celebrate the rich variety of cultures in our school through traditional foods shared by our community. Looking ahead, our Christmas celebrations will include a tree lighting and worship night, secret Santas, cozy pajama days, and a deep dive into the story of Jesus’ birth.

The Magic of Lucas Literacy Lab

Every day at Lucas Literacy Lab is alive with laughter, curiosity, learning, and faith. When they are here, our children are creators, explorers, friends, and thinkers. They learn to push boundaries, face fears, and discover new passions, all in a nurturing, Christ-centered environment.
