How Microschools Can Meet the Needs of Neurodiverse Students

Hot take: Children should not carry neurodiverse labels in school. When a student of mine says, "It's that I'm dyslexic," or "I can't because I have ADHD," I put a stop to it immediately. In a microschool setting like ours, where each student has an individualized learning plan, whether they've been evaluated or not, labels serve no purpose.

At Lucas Literacy Lab, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to learn in an environment tailored to them without being reduced to their diagnosis. The focus is always on the person, not the label. Instead of saying a student is “bad” at a subject, we say that they’re working at their own pace and in their own way—and that’s perfectly okay. We honor each student's journey and progress, ensuring they can succeed on their own terms.

Personalized Learning Plans

We create personalized learning plans (PLPs) for every student—whether or not they have a diagnosis. These plans are designed to work with each child's strengths and areas for growth, ensuring they are supported in the way that works best for them. Teachers use this information to provide a learning experience tailored to each child, with the flexibility to adapt based on individual needs.

Different Levels, Different Paces

In our school, working at different levels is completely normal. Students may progress at their own pace, sometimes excelling in one subject while needing more time in another. We embrace this diversity and create a supportive space where all learners feel valued, no matter where they are academically. This approach led some students to complete multiple grade levels in one year. They are not forced to keep pace with their peers.

Breaks and Movement Are Essential

For neurodiverse students, breaks and movement are vital for focus and energy. We normalize taking breaks to recharge and offer movement-based learning activities, such as kinesthetic exercises or sensory-friendly tools, to help students stay engaged.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

Our teaching is rooted in Universal Design for Learning (UDL), which offers multiple ways of engaging with content. Whether students learn best through reading, listening, or hands-on activities, we provide diverse ways for them to access material and show what they’ve learned, making sure every student has the opportunity to succeed in a way that suits them.

A Safe, Supportive Environment

Our small class sizes foster strong, trusting relationships between students and teachers. We create a safe, welcoming space where all students feel comfortable and supported. Whether it’s through sensory accommodations or extra attention, our goal is to help each child thrive, no matter their learning style.

At our microschool, we believe every child has the potential to succeed, and we work tirelessly to provide the personalized, supportive environment that helps them do just that. Labels are left behind—what matters most is how each child learns best.
