Following Christ's Example at School

anesbotlucas

This Sunday, as I reflected on the message shared during church service, I couldn’t help but think about how deeply the words resonated with our approach to education at our microschool. The sermon reminded us that Jesus was not only a teacher to the multitudes but a shepherd to the individual. In the Gospel of Mark, while Jesus was teaching the crowds, He noticed Levi, the son of Alphaeus, sitting at his tax booth. Jesus knew Levi personally and called him to follow. Despite the large crowd around Him, Jesus was attuned to the one—He saw beyond the surface and saw Levi for who he truly was.

That moment in Mark is a powerful reminder of how we are called to focus on the individual, not just the masses. Psalm 139 is also a powerful reminder of God's love for us: "For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb" (Psalm 139:13). God knows each of us intimately before we even take our first breath. He created us uniquely and with purpose. And just as God knows us personally, we believe that each child in our microschool is an individual to be understood, nurtured, and honored.

A Month to Know the Child

At our school, we take this understanding of the individual to heart. Before we dive into the curriculum or start any group unit studies, we dedicate an entire month to getting to know each child personally. We don't believe in rushing into lessons without first understanding who our students are—what excites them, what challenges them, what their strengths are, and where they need extra support. This time isn’t about testing or measuring academic skills; it’s about seeing the child for who they are.

We spend time observing, asking open-ended questions, and engaging in activities that help us learn about each child’s learning style, passions, and unique personality. Just as Jesus took the time to see Levi, we take the time to see each child. And it’s in this quiet, intentional observation that we begin to understand how to best nurture them. It’s about making sure that when we do begin the academic year, it’s with a deep understanding of the child’s needs, interests, and potential.

Crafting a Personalized Curriculum

Once we’ve spent this time getting to know each child, we move forward with curating the curriculum. But we do it thoughtfully—tailoring it to meet the unique needs of every student. Instead of using a one-size-fits-all approach that may not speak to every child, we create learning experiences that align with their strengths, interests, and natural ways of thinking. Whether it’s diving into a subject that sparks a child’s passion or adapting how we teach a concept to better suit their learning style, we approach education with flexibility and creativity.

For example, if we notice that one child has a deep love for art, we may incorporate more visual arts into their learning experience. If another child thrives through hands-on experiences, we’ll bring in more tactile, experiential learning. And because our class sizes are small, we can give each child the attention and support they need to truly flourish. We meet each child where they are and invite them to grow at their own pace, with encouragement and care.

Following Christ’s Example in Our Teaching

As an educator, I look to Jesus as the ultimate model of how to teach. Jesus didn’t just lecture from a distance; He engaged deeply with individuals, understanding their hearts and minds. He knew His students personally and met them where they were, offering them love, guidance, and a path to transformation.

We are called to do the same in our school. It’s not just about imparting knowledge—it’s about nurturing the whole child. It’s about walking alongside them, helping them discover their potential, and empowering them to use their gifts to serve the world. We believe that education is a sacred opportunity to help shape not just the minds but the hearts of our students.

In Psalm 139, we are reminded that each child is "fearfully and wonderfully made." Every child is a masterpiece, and we honor them as such. By taking the time to truly know them before we start formal lessons, we ensure that we are setting them up for success—academically, emotionally, and spiritually.

A School Built on Love and Care

This month-long period of getting to know each child is more than just a strategy—it’s the foundation of how we build relationships with our students. It’s about creating an environment where every child feels safe, seen, and valued. When children feel known and understood, they are more confident, more willing to take risks, and more motivated to learn.

As we begin this new school year, I’m filled with excitement about the journey ahead. I’m grateful for the opportunity to walk alongside each of our students, guiding them with love and care. I’m committed to honoring their individuality, just as Jesus did for Levi and the countless others He encountered. I believe that when we take the time to truly understand each child, we are honoring their worth and potential and helping them grow into the people they were always meant to be.

As I reflect on the example of Christ, I’m reminded once again of how He taught us to teach—not just to impart knowledge but to nurture the hearts of His children. I’m grateful to be a part of this incredible work.
