Building the Village

We’ve all heard the phrase “It takes a village to raise a child.” But in today’s world, that village can feel out of reach, especially for homeschooling families navigating education, parenting, and life on their own.
This message has never felt more real to me than it does now, as I watch my oldest daughter prepare to step into a brand-new chapter of her life. Just recently, she committed to Penn State—and it’s a moment I’ll never forget. Not just because I’m proud (which I am, beyond words), but because I know with my whole heart that I didn’t get her there alone.
We did it with the love, encouragement, and support of a strong village. Friends, family, mentors, and community members who stood by us during everything from her brain surgery to a move to a new state.
That’s what makes this work at Lucas Literacy Lab so personal for me. I know what it’s like to need community. I know what it means to have it. And I believe every child—and every parent—deserves that same kind of village.
That’s at the heart of why I started Lucas Literacy Lab.
Yes, we focus on individualized instruction. Yes, we’re proud of our enrichment offerings and our student-centered approach. But at the very core of our work is something deeper: community. Because no one-no parent, no child, no educator—should have to go it alone.
Microschooling Is More Than Academics
What we’re building here isn’t just a learning space. It’s a place where kids feel known, parents feel supported, and everyone has a seat at the table.
When families walk through our doors, they often carry more than backpacks. They bring past school trauma, worries about their child’s confidence, feelings of isolation, and questions about whether they’re doing enough. We meet all of that with open arms. Because being part of a microschool means your child isn’t just one of many. They’re part of a family-style learning environment where relationships matter as much as results.
Learning Happens in Connection
Children thrive when they feel safe, seen, and supported. That’s why our small group model isn’t just about academics—it’s about belonging.
In our learning space, students get to:
Build friendships that aren’t defined by grade level
Learn in a setting that honors their unique pace and voice
Feel part of something bigger than schoolwork
We create space for conversations, collaboration, and curiosity. Whether it’s during morning prayer time, enrichment classes, or lunch breaks in the yard, our kids are learning how to grow—not just in knowledge, but in kindness, confidence, and community.
Support for the Whole Family
One of the most powerful things we hear from parents is: “I didn’t realize how much I needed this, too.”
That’s because we don’t just support students—we support families. We know that homeschooling can be lonely, overwhelming, and filled with uncertainty. But it doesn't have to be.
At Lucas Literacy Lab, we:
Offer drop-off enrichment to give parents a break
Build parent connections through events and open communication
Handle as much or as little of your child's academic load as you need us to.
Whether you need a moment to breathe, a place to ask questions, or just someone to say “I see you”—we’re here.
We're Building Something Together
This work isn’t just about learning to read or write (though we’re really good at that, too!). It’s about building a village—one that’s rooted in love, growth, and mutual support.
At a time when many parents feel like they have to do everything alone, we’re saying: You don’t.
You belong here.
Your child belongs here.
We’re building something beautiful together.
